Just stopping by… will definitely be back!
Yes, congratulations, and I agree it’s great to have black women represented in all public spheres. I can’t say, however, that the Miss America Pageant is the most inspiring platform for women to speak their voices.
Marian,
It’s no sweat, I don’t think your comment was hating. I don’t think that beauty pageants are the biggest deal either, but if you really meet some of the women and see the kind of influence that they have and all of the people they help within their year of service, you see that it is actually a pretty big honor. I would never be in a pageant (mostly because I’m not in great of shape as I was when I was 21!) but I am starting to understand why women do them. Plus, they get job security for life! That is if they don’t end up with their mug shot in the tabloids or on youtube for saying something silly.
Congratulations to Miss Texas! I don’t know if it’s just me, but i’ve noticed that ever since pagents became less popular in recent years, that all of a sudden more black women were winning Miss USA pagents. Remember how the winner was paraded all over the media, on the front page of the paper, interviewed by every station, etc.? We don’t see that anymore and how convenient it is that the focus has shifted to the side when more black women are winning? This has been my observation after sharing a discussion about it in the past with friends. That’s media for you.
Somehow i missed the point. Probably lost in translation
Anyway … nice blog to visit.
cheers, Aerodrome
Why does skin color have to be an issue here? Why can’t she JUST BE Miss America? Blacks want to be recognized in society as equals and create a society of equality but we define events that occur in our society in terms of color. This is a lock-step method of separation, isolation, and subtle bigotry. The Klan was no different. They described everything in terms of skin color.
By defining Crystle Stewart as a black Miss USA, no other culture can identify with her as “Our Miss America” because other cultures are not Black. We did not have a White, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, ect. Miss America and for those that see women of different cultures as a Miss America of that culture then your eyes and hearts are racist; no matter the subtlety.
At some point in time (soon) the definition of success needs to be demonstrated from the character and content inside of a person, not the skin color or race of that person.
We often refer to the expression, “Keeping Dr. ML King’s Dream Alive” but we continually redefined his dream to suit our purpose. Dr. King said, “his dream is that we are judge by our character and not our skin color”. He did not ever waver on that statement throughout his entire life; up to his assassination.
I totally agree with the last statement!
The war was like 200years ago… Get over it. I don’t understand why race is such an issue here. It’s ridicules.
My congratulations go out to the Miss. USA 2008, she’s very beautiful.
